Modern medical engineering combines in one discipline spheres of knowledge from different scientific engineering, technical, medical and scientific fields which are indispensable to the health industry, the largest industrial sector in the world. Because of its powerful dynamics of development, medical engineering is considered to be one of the ten leading edge technologies of the 21st century. Consequently, German medical devices are in demand throughout the whole world. The training provided by the University of Applied Sciences Jena is primarily geared to meeting the increasing demand for highly qualified medical technicians in the State of Thuringia. However, because of the global importance of medical engineering, a number of graduates are also working beyond the borders of the State.
The Master’s degree in medical engineering enables the graduates to a job in the following vocational fields:
  • Engineering development and production of medical electronic equipment and sensory systems,
  • Application oriented research and development of medical information technology,
  • Development and implementation of hard-and software solutions,
  • Biomedical research in institutions, companies and hospitals.

Additionally, the master degree qualifies its holders for a career in the higher grades in the public sector and to study for a PhD at a university (these are mainly research-oriented courses).

Entry Requirements:
The master degree course is open to graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in medical engineering and to graduates with a Bachelor's degree in related subjects. Admission to the course is subject to an aptitude test. A positive result in the internal selection process where the following criteria are incorporated is required.
  • The overall score of the bachelor’s or Diplom degree (maximum of 75 points)
  • Publications, poster or a scientific presentation (up to 10 points)
  • Substance and persuasiveness of the letter of motivation (up to 5 points)
  • Vocational education and professional experience in the biomedical field (up to 10 points)
  • Subject-specific additional qualification in the biomedical field (up to 10 points)
  • Recommendations by academic advisors/reviewers/ experts (up to 10 points)

In order to pass the test, the applicant has to score at least 60 points out of the maximum of 120 points.
