Materials engineering is of enormous strategic importance for the development of innovative products and the efficiency and competitiveness of the economy. Surveys have shown that more than three quarters of the twenty largest German companies consider material research to be important to very important for future corporate development and that about 60% of all companies from different market segments engaged in research in Germany work in the field of materials engineering. Extensive research and funding programmes have been set up both nationally and internationally to promote development in this area. The Master's degree qualifies its holders to study for a PhD throughout the world.

The graduates of this course have the chance to work in the following vocational fields among others:
  • Fields of industry which make use of materials (automobile industry, power engineering, electronic engineering, information engineering)
  • Sectors of industry manufacturing materials (manufactures of construction materials, metallurgy, glass and ceramic industry)
  • Research facilities with their focus on materials science
  • Materials processing industries


Entry Requirements:
 
The entry requirement for admission to the Master’s degree course in materials engineering is a diploma with a pass mark of good or a Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering, material sciences or a comparable scientific-technical course of studies. Furthermore, proof of an adequate knowledge of English is required as well. This is normally provided by a TOEFL test or by the completion of a module in the Bachelor's degree course in English. This can include a module taught in English. In addition, a selection committee decides on admitting the student by the means of the following criteria:
  • Quality and the fitting accuracy of the completed Bachelor’s studiesSubstance and persuasiveness of the letter of motivation
  • Recommendations by academic advisors/reviewers/ experts
  • Possibly, the result of a voluntarily completed entrance examination where additional qualifications can be considered
  • Research project in a field that is relevant to this course and its quality.
